NIRA Showcases National ID Achievements at the Dan Qaran Government’s Third Anniversary Event

Mogadishu, Somalia, September 17, 2025 — The National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) marked a significant presence at the Federal Government of Somalia’s Dan Qaran Third Anniversary celebrations and the 2022–2025 Performance Exhibition, showcasing the substantial progress made in rolling out Somalia’s National ID system.

During the exhibition, the President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, H.E. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, together with the Speaker of the House of the People, Hon. Adan Mohamed Nur (Madoobe), the Prime Minister, Hon. Hamse Abdi Barre, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Salah Ahmed Jama, visited NIRA’s booth.

NIRA’s Director General, Mr Abdiweli Ali Abdulle (Timacadde), accompanied by his Deputy, Mr Abdirahman Said Ahmed, presented the national leaders with a comprehensive report on the Authority’s achievements over the past three years and outlined its future priorities. The country’s top leadership commended NIRA’s tangible progress and encouraged its team to intensify the nationwide effort to register every Somali citizen.

NIRA has successfully registered nearly half a million people since the official launch of the Somali National ID system in September 2023. The Authority has also established the critical infrastructure required for the system’s success, including state-of-the-art card printing machines, registration centres, 550 enrollment kits, a stock of five million high-security ID cards, and the recruitment and training of key personnel to sustain and expand operations.

Furthermore, NIRA has extended the National ID service to 30 Somali embassies abroad and integrated essential public and private services into the National ID system, making the card a central tool for accessing education, banking, passport issuance, business licensing, domestic travel, and other vital services.

To strengthen access and efficiency, NIRA has also rolled out key digital innovations: the eAqoonsi Digital App, which allows citizens to securely access their digital ID; the Hubiye Platform, which provides real-time verification and authentication; and the Certificate Delivery System (CDS), ensuring the timely and reliable delivery of registration certificates.

These milestones highlight NIRA’s unwavering commitment to providing every Somali citizen with a secure and verifiable national identity—an essential foundation for improved service delivery, greater financial inclusion, and the country’s broader development agenda.
