Identification

NIRA provides secure and reliable identification credentials for citizens and legal residents in Somalia, supporting identity verification and authentication across various sectors. The implementation of the Somali National ID System (SNIDS) enables the issuance of identity certificates, ID cards, and mobile IDs, all of which can be used interchangeably to verify an individual's identity. These credentials will enhance access to services and facilitate the safe and accurate authentication of individuals.

Identity Credentials

NIRA issues three primary forms of credentials: identity certificates, mobile IDs, and physical ID cards. These credentials are designed with robust security features and can be used across different services, such as banking, immigration, social protection, and legal notarization. Each type of credential is tailored for specific use cases and is available at different stages of the registration process.

Identity Certificate

The identity certificate serves as an interim identification document provided to individuals shortly after their registration. Available in either downloadable or hard copy formats, this certificate contains basic identity details and a digitally signed QR code that allows for online verification. It can be used for services such as travel, legal verification, and social protection. The certificate is issued within 48 hours after successful enrollment.

ID Card

The ID card is a physical, ISO-compliant card with advanced security features, including QR codes, holograms, and tamper-evident elements. It enables secure identity authentication for in-person services, including banking, immigration, and remittances. The processing time for ID cards is estimated to be around three weeks from the time of registration. Individuals will be notified through SMS or email when their ID card is ready for pickup at their local enrollment center.

Mobile ID

The mobile ID (E-aqoonsi App) is a digital solution that enables remote and online authentication for e-government services, e-commerce, and other digital transactions. Users can download the mobile ID through an app, undergo identity verification, and securely store the digital ID on their mobile devices. The mobile ID will be available starting in July 2024, offering users greater flexibility and access to services.
